Finding Balance Beyond the Desk

When she’s not helping clients navigate complex financial cases, Truffle Director Sarah Stroud takes on a very different challenge — volunteering with her local Coastguard team. We sat down with Sarah to talk about why she got involved, how she balances both worlds, and what she’s learned along the way.

What inspired you to get involved in the Coastguard?

Many years ago, I watched a Coastguard rescue take place near my home, and I was amazed by the teamwork and professionalism. A few years later, I saw a recruitment advert at my local gym and decided to apply. I was offered a position and have been volunteering ever since. It’s both challenging and rewarding, and it gives me a real sense of purpose outside of work.

With such a busy professional role, how do you manage to balance both commitments?

It’s definitely a juggling act, but I make myself available outside of work hours and at weekends. My Coastguard role fits around my schedule, and on occasion, if a major response is needed, I’ll step in and support the team. It’s all about good communication and time management — and having an understanding team at Truffle helps a lot.

Do you see your volunteering as a way to switch off from work, or does it complement your day job?

It’s absolutely my way to switch off. When I’m with the team, I’m focused on something completely different. But at the same time, it complements my professional life. Both roles are about helping people , one in a financial sense, the other in a practical, community-focused way. The Coastguard also feels like a second family, which is very grounding.

Are there skills that overlap between your Coastguard role and your work at Truffle?

Definitely. Teamwork, empathy and communication are key in both environments. You also need to be calm under pressure and sensitive to the situations you’re dealing with. Those experiences have strengthened how I lead and support others at work.

How do you look after your wellbeing while managing two demanding roles?

I make time for myself through exercise and fresh air. I love walking — it helps me clear my head and stay focused. It’s important to keep a level perspective, whether you’re handling a busy week at work or a challenging call-out with the team.

What has volunteering given you personally?

Confidence. It’s reminded me that I can take on new challenges and adapt to different situations. Being part of a team that truly has your back gives you a lot of strength — and I see that same spirit in the team at Truffle, too.

What advice would you give to others who want to find balance outside of work?

Go for it. Step outside of your comfort zone and try something new. You’ll be surprised by what you can do when you believe in yourself. Finding an outlet outside of work — your own “escape valve” — can completely change your perspective and make you stronger in every area of life.

And finally, how do you like to relax when you do get some downtime?

I enjoy walking, going to the gym, and spending time with family and friends. Balance doesn’t always mean slowing down — sometimes it’s just about doing something that recharges you in a different way.

At Truffle, we believe that balance and wellbeing are essential to success. Sarah’s story is a perfect reminder that stepping outside your comfort zone can not only refresh your perspective but also bring new energy, confidence, and purpose — both inside and outside of work.

We are so proud of you, Stroudy!
